A powerful and thought-provoking true story, based on the book of the same name, Just Mercy follows young lawyer Bryan Stevenson and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan had his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation.

  • Special mortgage options available for lawyers
  • First home buyer and stamp duty concessions, the differences between ACT & NSW
  • Understanding the difference between a mortgage offset or redraw and why it’s important

  • How to pay that loan down, faster

Mentor breakfasts provide our members with the opportunity to hear from a prominent woman in the community and to celebrate and learn from their achievements.

Linda was elected federal member for Barton in 2016, following a 14 year career in the NSW Parliament as Member for Canterbury. During her state political career she served as minister in a number of senior portfolios including as minister for Community Services and later as Deputy Leader of the Opposition.

Following her election to the Federal House of Representatives she was immediately appointed as Shadow Minister for Human Services.

As a proud member of the Wiradjuri nation, Linda was the first Aboriginal person to be elected to the NSW Parliament and the first Aboriginal woman to serve in the Australian House of Representatives.  Linda’s commitment to Indigenous issues spans more than 30 years.

She began her career as a teacher in western Sydney and then as an education bureaucrat before being appointed Director General of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs in 2000.  Charles Sturt University awarded her, its first Aboriginal graduate, an Honorary Doctorate in Education in 2002.

Linda has a long held commitment the prevention of domestic violence and family violence and has detailed publically her personal experience with it. 

Linda has held senior positions in the non-government sector serving on a number of Boards including the SBS, the NSW Anti-Discrimination Board, and the NSW Board of Studies.

ACT Lawyers may be eligible to claim 1 CPD point in Core Area 3

WLA ACT is pleased to invite you to our first Mentor Breakfast of 2017, with guest speaker Noor Blumer, Director of Blumers Personal Injury Lawyers and 2016 Woman Lawyer of the Year.

Noor Blumer is currently Director of Blumers Personal Injury Lawyers. She moved to Canberra in 2000 and, with her husband Mark Blumer, established the successful and widely-recognised personal injury firm.

Noor finished school at age 16, and later studied law remotely from Griffith, NSW, while at the same time working full time and caring for her children. When she was admitted to practice, she was the only woman lawyer in Griffith and later became the first woman to be a law partner in the entire Riverina district. 

She has served as President of the ACT Law Society, when she was only the second woman to be elected in the Society's history. Her selection as WLA ACT's inaugural Woman Lawyer of the Year 2016 was a surprise to no one, being a leader and inspiration to her peers and the women lawyers who come after her. 

Mentor breakfasts provide our members with the opportunity to hear from a prominent woman in the legal profession and to celebrate and learn from their achievements.

Noor will share her insights on her fascinating career at our first mentor breakfast of the year.

Law Week approaches and WLA ACT is once again proud to host the Law Week Dinner on 18 May 2016 at The Boat House by the Lake, generously sponsored by the Maurice Blackburn Lawyers Women’s Network.

Continuing the tradition of compelling guest speakers for the Dinner, this year we are thrilled to welcome Group Captain Catherine McGregor AM.

Until her resignation in December 2015 Catherine McGregor was the world's highest-ranking transgender military officer. She was also awarded an Order of Australia for exceptional service to the Australian Army in 2012.  Catherine's extraordinary life has spanned decorated solider, first-class cricketer, acclaimed cricket writer and political operative, and is intertwined with her compelling personal battle that led to her decision to transition as a woman at age 56. She was named as one of Australia’s 50 most powerful women by the Australian Women’s Weekly and honoured with being named the 2016 Queensland Australian of the Year.

Don't miss this opportunity to hear Catherine. Tables of 8 can also be purchased. For members of WLA ACT, tickets are $130.  For non-members tickets are $140.

WLA ACT is pleased to invite you to our first Mentor Breakfast of 2016, with guest speaker Katrina Cooper, Senior Legal Advisor at the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade.

Katrina Cooper is currently the Senior Legal Advisor at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with oversight of international and domestic law issues. She has had a varied career as a diplomat, including postings to Chile, Port Moresby and as Australia’s Ambassador to Mexico. She has also recently been announced as the next Deputy Chief of Mission to Washington DC.

Mentor breakfasts provide our members with the opportunity to hear from a prominent woman in the legal profession and to celebrate and learn from their achievements.

Katrina will share her insights on her career as a lawyer and diplomat, and on her work with the Women in Leadership initiative at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

WLA ACT, in conjunction with the Women's Legal Centre and Legal Aid ACT, has the pleasure of inviting you to the book launch of 'Whispers from the Bush: The Workplace Sexual Harassment of Australian Rural Women', by Dr Skye Saunders.

Dr Skye Saunders is an academic at the Australian National University (ANU). Prior to joining the ANU, Skye worked as a Canberra-based solicitor in the area of Employment Relations and Discrimination Law where she developed a particular interest in sexual harassment matters. Skye is an advocate for issues of gender and the law, particularly in the complex context of remote Australian communities.

We are delighted to invite you to our first event of the new calendar year on Saturday, 20 January 2016 - our Family Day at the ACT Supreme Court, followed by High Tea nearby at Parlour Wine Room, New Acton.

Do your kids (or grandchildren or nieces or nephews...) wonder what on earth you do at work?  Bring them along to the Family Day so they can sit at the bar table, try on a wig & gown and visit the cells!  Entry is free and we would love to see you and your families there.
