  • Palace Electric Nishi Building New Acton (map)

This event has now sold out. Thank you for your interest. If you would like to be added to the wait list please email contact@wlaact.org.au.

The Women Lawyers Association of the ACT is is pleased to invite you to a special event screening of Just Mercy.

A powerful and thought-provoking true story, Just Mercy following young lawyer Bryan Stevenson and his history-making battle for justice. After graduating from Harvard, Bryan has his pick of lucrative jobs. Instead, he heads to Alabama to defend those wrongly condemned or who were not afforded proper representation.

One of his first, and most incendiary, cases is that of Walter McMillian, who, in 1987, was sentenced to die for the notorious murder of an 18 year old girl, despite a preponderance of evidence proving his innocence and the fact that the only testimony against him came from a criminal with a motive to lie. In the years that follow, Bryan becomes embroiled in a labyrinth of legal and political maneuverings and overt and unabashed racism as he fights for Walter, and others like him, with the odds - and the system - stacked against them.

Tickets are $10 for members and $20 for non-members. Each ticket includes a glass of wine and a choice between a small popcorn and an ice cream.

The screening starts at 6:30pm sharp. Attendees are welcome to arrive from 5:30pm and we ask that you are seated by 6:20pm.

WLA ACT is very grateful to Maddocks for their generous sponsorship of the event.
